Voice Coach Jeanne

196127_10151362308323529_124000270_nJeanne Marcelle Velasco-Vicars is the fourth child of lyric tenor Noel Velasco and coloratura soprano Zonia Elvas-Velasco. As a child Jeanne and her siblings were often brought to choir rehearsals and performances, as well as opera concerts and musical plays featuring their parents. At times voice lessons her parents conducted in the house would be playfully imitated by Jeanne and her siblings. Eventually her parents decided to include all five children in one of their choral concerts, even had them featured in Uncle Bob’s Lucky Seven Club on Channel 7. Little did she know that all of this exposure would greatly influence her to be a musician and a teacher someday.

Jeanne’s choral training started at the age of 9 when she joined her brother and two sisters in the University of the Philippines Cherubims and Seraphims under Dr. Flora Zarco-Rivera. With this choir Jeanne was able to go on tour to the United States and Hongkong in 1982. Her choral experience and training continued under Jerry Dadap (the Andres Bonifacio Concert Choir, 1984-1986 and 1996-present), Joel Navarro (the AILM Chorale 1989-1991), Celine Valdes-Fabella (for the 10th Anniversary of Windsong Christian Music Ministries as part of the Praise Team), Eudenice Palaruan (the New Covenant Singers 1998-2001), and Jonathan Velasco, Ryan Cayabyab and Julian Quirit (The San Miguel Master Chorale).

Jeanne credits Aileen Espinosa-Cura, Joel Navarro, Jonathan Macarambon, Celine Valdes-Fabella, Zonia Elvas-Velasco and Noel Velasco for her voice training. Her teaching technique on the other hand is greatly influenced by Eudenice Palaruan, Jonathan Velasco, and Prof. Carmencita Arambulo, pioneer of the Suzuki Method in the Philippines. Jeanne was also a linguistics researcher for Prof. Arambulo, which is an important aspect of her teaching method.

Jeanne proved to be an impressionable child because as early as 13 years old she started teaching her first choir. She taught her high school freshman class the song “Payapang Daigdig” in three voices for their Christmas Choral Competition – they won second place. For the next three years she would teach her high school classmates and help them win this competition. In her senior year she was single-handedly conducting the Trinity High School Glee Club which performed only acapella pieces under her baton. To date Jeanne has handled 10 church choirs, 4 company choirs, 8 praise bands and 6 school choirs (high school and university). She has also conducted more than 50 voices workshops and taught more than 400 voice students individually. At present she is General Manager of her mother’s school SHOWSTOPPERS Center for Music and Arts since 2005.

As an on-call voice instructor at ABS-CBN Workshops and recording coach for ABS-CBN Talent Center, Jeanne was voice coach for the pre-launch of Pinoy Dream Academy’s Cebu Dorm in 2005, but in 2011 Jeanne became a voice coach for GMA 7’s Protege, of Claire dela Fuente’s protege Jensen Kyra Tenoso. Other voice students of Teacher Jeanne include Sarah Geronimo, Jennylyn Mercado, Kathryn Bernardo, Jason Fernandez, Isabelle de Leon, Carmi Martin, Jonalyn Viray, 2011 Karaoke World Philippine Champions Joel Cruz and Lyda Roxas, and “Sir Chief” Richard Yap. For recording, Jeanne has coached Gary Valenciano, Piolo Pascual, John Lloyd Cruz, Bea Alonzo, Yeng Constantino, Billy Crawford (for rap), Nikki Gil, Karylle, Jericho Rosales, Vina Morales, Sam Milby, John Estrada, KC Concepcion, Maja Salvador, Jason Abalos, Kitchie Nadal, Dingding Avanzado, Kim Chu and Charice. Jeanne was also a speech coach to Joross Gamboa, Chubie del Rosario and Andrew Wolff.

Jeanne, with the Lord’s guidance, has developed her own approach to voice teaching called Vocal Sound Management, a unique approach to correcting vocal faults and effecting vocal adjustment in the shortest possible time. Can’t seem to sing in tune? Always hoarse or losing your voice? Do you want to increase your vocal range? Do you want to increase your volume? Do you want to improve your enunciation? Do you want to enhance your vocal expression? Do you want to clean up your sound? Then Vocal Sound Management is for you.

This approach proves to be most effective in improving intonation and volume, most versatile in the number of genres the technique is applicable to, more accurate in correcting vocal faults, technical but more understandable, theoretical but engages your common sense, and above all it’s easy for students of whatever age and background. Students of Vocal Sound Management experience the corrected and adjusted voice on the very first day of their lesson. The theoretical approach which needs at least 4 sessions for each student to reach a level of consistency helps make the students self-reliant because they learn how to correct themselves, and their artistry and musicality is also enhanced.
